It keeps the runny pie from running. Many TALL fruit pies are rather moist inside....especially when not properly cooked. This tool insures that everyone gets a comprehensive slice of pie.I'm a nerd.
Bitzky's research was going to be my guess. I'm not really a fruit pie eater (why eat fruit when you can have a creamy chocolate or coconut cream pie?? hello!!!!) but I can see how this would be handy for those who don't want their fruit runnin outta the crust.

I think it's for a family who can't agree on what kind of pie they want...kinda like a pizza pie.Maybe half apple and half strawberry.....or even better for Andrea especially....half Chocolate cream and half cocnut cream.....yummy!!!!!
